Why Do I Care What Others Think About Me?
If you’ve been asking yourself, ” why do I care what others think about me?” it could be because of many various reasons.
According to Psychology Today, we worry so much about what people think of us because we want to fit in and be in their good books.
Caring what others think could also be because you weren’t allowed to be yourself or think for yourself while growing up, so you ended up being conditioned to seek validation and to ask for permission in everything you do.
As a result, you second-guess your desires and decisions in life, so you always feel the need to ask for other people’s opinions or you’re easily affected by what others think about you.

How To Stop Caring What People Think Of You
1. Know That What Others Think Of You is Not Your Business
The most important thing you have to remember all the time, starting today, is that what others think of you is none of your business.
When someone expresses a particular opinion about how you should look, where you should be in life, or what you should be doing with your life, remember that those are just their opinions and they have nothing to do with you.
As long as you truly want to do something, what others think doesn’t matter, and you shouldn’t give their opinions much of your time.
So When you put on an outfit, and you like how it looks on you, or you try a new hairstyle you find cute, don’t change anything just because someone else said they don’t like how it looks on you.
Do you, be you, and remember that what others think about you is none of your business.
2. Stop Asking for People’s Opinions
Okay, this one changed my life when I was struggling to stop caring about other people’s opinions.
I heard someone say that when you ask for someone’s opinions, what they tell you is based on their beliefs, fears, and experiences.
It’s literally everything to do with them and nothing to do with you. Just because things happened a certain way for them doesn’t mean that you will go through the same thing.
However, this doesn’t mean that you should go through life alone making whatever decision you want.
You should rather find the right people to give you constructive criticism, and consider the source when someone gives you their opinion.
Is it someone who cares about you, and knows what they’re talking about? Or is it someone who is miserable, unhappy, and who always has something to say about everyone’s life?
Before you give other people’s opinions too much time, ask yourself whether it’s constructive criticism or if it’s just someone who is projecting their fears to you.
Like if it’s someone who is exactly where you want to be or who found success in the same thing you’re trying to build, their opinions matter because you’re exactly where they used to be.
However, if it’s just your relative who doesn’t even know anything about that business you want to start or that goal you want to go after, don’t give their opinions the time of your day.
So instead of taking everyone’s opinions, consider the source and seek constructive criticism for important decisions.
You should also trust yourself and be confident in your choices and desires. Otherwise, you will end up giving your power to other people.
Activity – Practice these positive affirmations every day to trust yourself more:
-
I am confident in who I am, and I trust myself
-
I live life without concern about what others think of me
-
I always go after what I want
-
I am free from worry about what others may think about my plans and goals
-
I make my own decisions, and I think for myself
3. Put Yourself First
Another thing you need to remember is that your life is your life and it was ONLY given to you. You need to start calling all the shots and making the best decisions for yourself.
Write down your goals and desires in life, know who you want to become, and focus on pursuing the things you actually care about.
If you want to take that opportunity, take it! If you believe that doing things a certain way is best for you, go for it.
Focus on doing what is best for you, and make it your goal to never hold yourself back because of what other people think.
This is your life, not theirs, so stop living it for other people.
And understand that there’s no such a thing as a bad decision. Every decision you make will teach you a lot and help you grow as a person.
Activity – Write down the top goals you want to achieve, your beliefs and values, and who you want to become.

4. Remember That People Don’t Care That Much Anyway
How often do you see someone and start judging what they look like, who they are, or their life choices? Probably never.
In the same way, most people don’t care that much about you or notice those little things you’re insecure about.
Everyone has worries of their own and most people, whom you think are judging you, are probably worrying about what other people think of them too.
And this is such a relieving truth to learn because most of the time we overthink and become harsh on ourselves when in reality, people don’t really care that much.
So the next time you catch yourself thinking, “what will people say” remember that they don’t care that much anyway.
5. Stop Trying To Please Everyone
Not everyone will like you, and that’s OKAY! If someone out there doesn’t like you or support you, remember that some people will not like you WHILE others will accept you for who you are.
Since you know who you are and what you stand for, focus on surrounding yourself with people who share your values and accept you for who you are.
Instead of trying to please everyone, focus on those who care about you and support you.
Accept that everyone will have their opinions, but they don’t have to determine your worth or direct your life.
Final Thoughts…
To fully put yourself first, and stop living your life for other people: Love yourself, build your confidence, and trust yourself more.
Trust me, people’s opinions only hurt you when deep down, you agree with what they’re saying.
Believe in yourself, and forgive yourself because not caring what others think is a journey, and sometimes you will find yourself struggling to let go of other people’s opinions.
When someone gives you their opinion, consider whether it’s constructive criticism or whether they’re just being rude or projecting.
So trust yourself, try your best always, remember that what others think about you is none of your business, and live your best life.
